Kyle Griffith - a waiter at Buffalo Wild Wings in Kentucky - found that a customer had left a homophobic note on their receipt, instead of leaving a tip.
The message read, “Sorry, I don’t tip f*ggots,” along with the hashtag #UNeedJesus.
Griffith was shocked, because there hadn’t been a problem while he was serving the customers.
He posted the receipt—omitting the customer’s name—on Facebook, where it was widely shared.
Griffith says he posted the note because “The hate has got to stop”.
“I want to be able to tell everyone that this is not a lie, that this is truth, this is an everyday happening. It’s an occurrence that can’t happen any longer. It’s got to stop. The hate has to stop. There’s no reason for it.”
Buffalo Wild Wings released a statement supporting Griffith, urging customers to be respectful.
“We’re disappointed to learn about the comment left on a receipt by a guest at one of our independently owned franchise locations in Louisville recently. Because Buffalo Wild Wings is about creating a great guest experience, we feel strongly that our restaurant environment needs to be respectful in order to provide the experience that our Guests and Team Members expect and deserve."
While the original Facebook post has since been reported as “offensive” and taken down, it did find its way to the homophobic customer.
Griffith says the woman who left the note commented on his post and apologised, saying that it was a “joke”.
“It’s not something you should joke about. My sexual preference at all shouldn’t be something someone should joke about,” says Griffith.
