As we mark the death anniversary of the martyrs, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru on 23rd March, here is an interview with Prof Jagmohan Singh, not only an acclaimed historian and writer but also the nephew of Shaheed e Azam Bhagat Singh.

Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh was an Indian socialist considered to be one of the most influential revolutionaries of the Indian independence movement.

According to Prof Jagmohan Singh, Bhagat Singh was born into a family where previous generations chose the path of the "common good" rather than pursuing personal gain.

Apart from being smitten by the philosophy of Kartar Singh Sarabha and Lala Lajpat Rai, the young Bhagat Singh grew up in an atmosphere that exposed him to Arya Samaj, Sikhism, Sufism, even Marxism and Socialism.

Prof Singh also tells us that Bhagat Singh's identity has often been twisted and turned by opportunistic political groups to suit their needs.

"Even Bollywood movies have failed to do justice to the man's vision," he says.
