In an effort to grow a diverse workforce, Victoria Police is currently encouraging people from CALD communities to join their ranks in various roles. Sergeant Dilbar Singh who has been working with Vic Police for the last 17 years shares his experiences, challenges and the satisfaction that he receives from serving the communities in distress.

Victoria Police, an organization with over 22,000 staff, serving from 350 stations is committed to serving communities from diverse backgrounds.

The force employs four types of staff, including Police Officers, Protective Service Officers (PSO), Police Custody Officers (PCO) and Victorian Public Service Officers (VSO).

As their names suggest, the first two officers are sworn officers who primarily serve on the front line, including protecting public spaces. In contrast, PCOs and VSOs handle the care of detainees and various administrative tasks, including financial services, media, legal expertise, and information technology.

Victoria Police is appealing to people from diverse backgrounds to join their police force.

Speaking to SBS Punjabi, Dilbar Singh, who has served with Victoria Police for 17 years, shared his insights, "Police work is extremely satisfying. While it involves shift work, it also offers excellent shift loading and nine weeks of annual leave."

"The roster for shift work is available one month in advance, allowing you to discuss your availability with your supervisor," he added.
