O primeiro-ministro Malcolm Turnbull disse que as agências anti-terrorismo descobriram um alegado plano de atacar um avião, possivelmente com uma explosão, na Austrália.
Quatro homens foram detidos ontem à noite, sábado, quando oficiais fortemente armados fizeram uma batida em quatro propriedades em Sydney.
O comissário da Polícia Federal australiana, Andrew Colvin, disse que a investigação continua:
"In recent days, law enforcement has become aware of information that suggested that some people in Sydney were planning to commit a terrorist act using an improvised device. At this time, we don't have a great deal of information on the specific attack - the location, date or time, however we are investigating information, indicating that the aviation industry was potentially a target of that attack."
O primeiro-ministro disse que novas medidas mais austeras de segurança foram implementadas nos aeroportos australianos.
Malcolm Turnbull disse que os australianos precisam estar cientes das mudanças: processos mais demorados no embarque e a recomendacao de levar menos bagagem, tanto para despachar como de mão, para que o processo seja mais rápido.
"The Office of Transport Security has advised that security screening will take longer and travellers should arrive at terminals at least two hours before flights to allow ample time for screening. They should limit the amount of carry-on and checked baggage so far as possible as this will help to ensure that security screening is efficient and airlines of course, will be able to provide further advice on the impact of these measures on your particular flights."
O ministro federal da justiça, Michael Keenan, está apelando aos australianos para que estejam vigilantes, após as detenções em Sydney, ontem, em ligação a um possível atentado terrorista a uma aeronave.
O ministro disse que desde 2014, 70 pessoas já foram acusadas como resultado de 31 operações anti-terrorismo no país.
O governo diz que a maior ameaça ao país continua sendo ataques isolados, mas que os eventos da última noite mostram o risco potencial da ameaça de ataques sofisticados.
O ministro Keenan disse que todos os australianos tem um papel a desempenhar para manter o país seguro.
"Now in light with this information, it's very important that everyone around Australian remains vigilent. If there is something you see that seems suspicious - if there is something that doesn't seem right - then call the national security hotline on 1800 123 400. All the information that we get helps us to complete an intelligence picture about what is going on and it helps our agencies to do this very important job - the job that they are doing so well of keeping the Australian people safe."
O procurador-geral da Austrália, George Brandis, está na Indonésia participando de um encontro dos países da Ásia-Pacífico, para discutir medidas para aumentar a segurança nos seus países.
Seis paises concordaram numa série de medidas anti-terrorismo.
George Brandis disse que a atenção está voltada para uma maior cooperação entre agências de segurança e uma maior troca de informações entre os países:
"To enable us to learn from one another in fields as various as civic programmes, law reform, management of terrorist prisons and other fields as well and to build an architecture through which the six nations represented today can continue to work together, learn from one another, to assist one another to ensure that we always stay ahead of the terrorists."
