Ryan Murphy is one of the busiest men on television. With his ongoing anthology series American Horror Story, Murphy has seen legendary character actresses like Angela Bassett, Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates and Jessica Lange as series regulars.
Next year Murphy's follow-up to the hugely successful American Crime Story will also air, focussing on the assassination of Gianni Versace, featuring Penélope Cruz, Ricky Martin and Darren Criss.
This week another series of Murphy's finally got the greenlight and once again the cast is something to mention, however, this time Murphy is making history.
FX in the U.S. announced on Wednesday that Murphy's series Pose would be going ahead with an eight-episode series, and it will feature the largest trans cast of series regulars ever to appear on American TV.
The musical series takes a look at the various worlds of New York in the '80s. According to it "looks at the juxtaposition of several segments of life and society in New York: the rise of the luxury Trump-era universe, the downtown social and literary scene and the ball culture world".
Commenting on the announcement Murphy said, "I am so proud that Pose and FX has made history right from the beginning by featuring the most trans series regular actors ever in an American television production".
"Additionally," Murphy continued, "the first season Pose will feature 50-plus LGTBQ characters," another record breaker for representation on American TV.
The casting for the trans actors reportedly took six months, with a nationwide search and includes MJ Rodriguez, Indya Moore, Dominique Jackson, Hailie Sahar and Angelica Ross. They will star alongside Evan Peters (a Murphy regular), Kate Mara and James Van Der Beek. The series originally shot a pilot starring Orphan Black's Tatiana Maslany but the role has reportedly been reimagined.
While Pose has already made history with its promise for representation on screen Murphy has also vowed to bring trans voices behind the camera also.
Through his , which attempts to create opportunities for women and minorities behind the camera in Hollywood, Murphy plans to mentor emerging trans directors while prominent trans voices Janet Mock and Our Lady J will serve as executive producers.
