Thousands filled the streets of Mumbai this weekend for the city’s pride parade, celebrating the LGBT+ community and marching for equal rights.
According to , the procession stopped traffic as musicians played dhol drums and supporters danced in the streets.
Parents marched in support of their LGBT+ children, including the father of Mr Gay India World 2016. Sushant Divgikar tweeted a photo of his dad saying, “Every year my gem of a father walks hand in hand with his son to support and celebrate equality, love and acceptance at the LGBT pride march.”
Supporters flew to Mumbai from around the world to attend the festivities, including the Pink Singers, an LGBT choir from London.
“It’s a wonderful energy here today. The engagement of the city with different sexualities and identities is here in full force to witness,” says Annie Rang, a member of the Pink Singers.
Homosexuality is currently illegal in India under section 377 of the country's penal code. The Supreme Court brought the 100-year-old law back into effect in 2013, with the ruling that “carnal intercourse against the order of nature” would be outlawed.
Attendee Aditi Phadnis told , "It is so nice to see so many people in Mumbai and in India who voice LGBTQ support. It is a revelation to see a tangible sign of things changing in India."
