A TV adaptation of DC Comics' Batwoman is set to become the first live-action superhero series with an openly gay character in the lead.
Currently in development for the CW network, producers behind the series describe Batwoman AKA Kate Kane as an "out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city's criminal resurgence".
According to the show's synopsis, Kane is "armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind".
Ever the relatable superhero, Batwoman must also "overcome her own demons" while trying to keep Gotham City safe.
The character of Batwoman was first introduced to comic-lovers in the 1950s as an easy way of dispelling rumours that Batman was gay.
DC then reintroduced the superhero in 2006 as an openly gay woman by the name of Kate Kane.
The series is being written and executive produced by Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaries).
