The idea proposed is for a new skill enhancement course that will cover Facebook posts in addition to blogs and cover letters.

The suggestion came as part of the draft curriculum for the forthcoming academic year, with the university’s Head of English Christel Devadawson explaining her desire to upskill students as much as possible.

“Skill enhancement courses in general are meant to take the emphasis from just literary-centric teaching to broad-based, everyday, contemporary concerns,” Devadawson tells the .

The course will go well beyond the commonplace status updates seen on Facebook. It will cover post writing as “academic writing” with the medium now expanded to be provide writers and poets with a way to reach a wider audience.

Yet to be approved by the university, the English department is awaiting feedback from teachers on the course as college officials work to determine how such a class would be taught.

When the recommendations are finalised they will be sent to the necessary councils for approval.

Most current courses that cover Facebook are marketing-based, enabling users learn the best ways to promote their business or product, with the social media platform averaging greater than active users a month.
