Qatar’s early elimination from the 2022 FIFA World Cup comes as a blow to the host nation whose loan 78th-minute goal in this morning’s (AEDT) 1-3 match to Senegal was not enough to secure a single point or give themselves a chance at their progression in the tournament.
The news of elimination came after Ecuador striker Enner Valencia earned his country a 1-1 World Cup draw against the Netherlands hours later, a result that will see these two teams move to four points each in Group A.
Qatar’s double loss leaves them with zero points, making it a mathematical impossibility for Qatar to progress from the group stage.
This morning’s result, or lack of, sees Qatar add to unwanted records they are quickly accumulating as the 2022 hosts.
Qatar became the first host nation to lose the opening match of the World Cup with a 2-0 loss against Ecuador on 20 November.
Only one other host nation has remained winless in their first two World Cup matches, which was South Africa in 2010. They drew 1-1 against Mexico and lost 3-0 against Uruguay.
Qatar is now the only nation in history to lose the opening first two matches, an embarrassing statistic after paying an estimated $200 billion (USD) to host the event. They now join South Africa as the only host nations to get knocked out of the tournament in the group stage.
Ecuador plays Senegal on Tuesday, needing just a draw to advance to the knockout stage. Netherlands will play Qatar.
Ecuador may have to do it without Valencia, though. He was stretchered off the field in the 90th minute. He was able to get up and walk to the bench, where a bag of ice was taped to his right leg.
