Panel tackles inequality of competition opportunities to kick off Indigenous football week

Indigenous Football Week got off to a great start with an interesting panel discussion of gender equality through Indigenous Football Competition Opportunities and the additional barriers facing Indigenous women and girls.

The discussion was the first in a series of Facebook live broadcasts as part of the event to spread awareness of the setbacks facing the growth of football in Indigenous communities and how it affects players, coaches and others involved in the sport.

The panel, made up of Gunggari man Damian Munday, founder of Queensland Indigenous Football, Alyawarre woman Jadeen Chisholm, Program Coordinator with Queensland Indigenous Football, Darug man, Greg Hartge, previous National Indigenous Men’s Coach and U16 Women’s NSW Institute Coach, Wiradjuri woman Nyoka Boney, JMF Community Football Coach and Wiradjuri man Brad Prince, JMF Community Football Coach, gave their insights on the topic from their experiences of being apart of the Indigenous football community.

They touched on a variety of issues impacting female participation in football including lack of competition, travel barriers, age gaps and lack of pathways for young players and talked through the ways in which each member is attempting to combat these issues and continue to grow the game.
