National Indigenous Fashion Awards reveals nominees

The prestigious awards celebrate First Nations creatives and will be held on Larrakia Country.

The list of nominees for the prestigious National Indigenous Fashion Awards has been released, with the winners to be announced at the  on Larrakia Country in August.

The list showcases an impressive line-up of nominees for the awards' second outing, following a successful inaugural year which cemented the ceremony’s place on the Australian fashion calendar.

The event is a celebration of the rich history and diversity of Australia’s First Nations art, design, and culture, and provides pathways for emerging creatives to build the sector.

Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair Foundation’s head of Indigenous Fashion Projects, Dave Giles-Kaye told NITV News they were “thrilled” to host the event in Darwin.

"It recognises and celebrates the incredible work of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and design in textiles and fashion. 

“The industry-recognised awards showcase works that share ancient stories and culture as well as demonstrate cutting edge contemporary design, reflecting the rich diversity of Australia’s First Nations peoples,” Mr Giles-Kaye said.

Among the promising designers in the running to receive an award are Nancy Pattison from popular brand, , Denni Francisco from  and Yvonne Odegaard of Moydra Designs.

The Warlu collection will be showcased, as pictured at last year’s inaugural event.
There are six categories for which creatives can be nominated.

They are: cultural adornment and wearable art, textile design, fashions design, environmental and social contribution, community collaboration, and a special recognition for individuals that have shown an exceptional contribution to the development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander textiles and fashion.

The ceremony is scheduled to be held on the 3rd of August and will also showcase collections from several of Australia’s leading Indigenous creatives.
