Aboriginal man dies in Townsville prison

He was found in his cell on Wednesday, with Queensland Corrective Services now assisting police to prepare a report for the coroner.

A 43-year-old man has died after being found unresponsive in his cell at Townsville Men’s Correctional Centre.

Queensland Correctional Services (QCS) confirmed to NITV News that the man is of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander decent but further details about his death have not been provided.

He was located by officers on Wednesday morning.

"Officers commenced CPR and an ambulance was called, however the man could not be revived," a QCS statement read.

"Queensland Police Service has been notified and Queensland Corrective Services will assist police to prepare a report for the Coroner.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the man’s family, friends and community. Support is being offered to the responding officers."

In its latest report filed in December 2021, The National Deaths in Custody Program recorded 489 Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander deaths in custody in the 30 years since the Royal Commission.
