A police investigation is now underway after a death threat was written across the entrance of Melbourne's biggest Jewish school over the weekend.

The principal of Mount Scopus Memorial College says his students are terrified after the threat was sprayed across its fence.

Dan Sztrajt says the school community is really hurting - and this incident is part of a much bigger problem.

"What happened outside on our front gate did not happen in isolation; it did not occur in a vacuum. What happened outside the front gate is a product of unchecked racism, unchecked anti-Semitism, directed towards this community without people standing up and saying, this is unacceptable."

Australia is preparing to help Papua New Guinea after a deadly landslide killed almost 700 people.

The terrain around the disaster zone in Enga province remains dangerous and unstable, prompting the evacuation of about 1,250 survivors.

But despite the difficulties, rescue efforts are continuing, involving national emergency response teams, police, the army and the United Nations.

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles says Australia stands ready to offer whatever support PNG might need in those efforts.

"We've got airlift capacity to get people there. There may be other equipment that we can bring to bear in terms of the search and rescue and all of that. We are talking through with PNG right now."

France says it will lift a state of emergency declaration in New Caledonia as planned tomorrow morning, despite continuing unrest in the French territory.

The state of emergency is due to end early Tuesday morning.

The government has released a statement that says the decision shows Paris's desire to start the process of de-escalation and re-establish conditions for dialogue.

President Emmanuel Macron has maintained that France intends to still push ahead with electoral reforms, but wants pro and anti-independence parties on the island to reach a broad deal on the island's future first.

Twelve people have been injured on a second international flight hit by turbulence.

The passengers and crew members were hurt when the plane - heading from Qatar to Ireland - hit an air pocket as it was flying over Turkiye.

Qatar Airways says the Boeing 787 landed safely and as scheduled.

It's confirmed eight of the people injured in the turbulence have now been hospitalised.

The Western Australian government is considering a review of the state's gun laws after a mother and daughter were shot dead in their Perth home by a man looking for his estranged wife.

The 63 year old shooter held a firearms licence and owned 13 guns.

Premier Roger Cook says he would consider strengthening the state's gun laws again, which have already been recently updated.

Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie has also weighed in on the tragedy, saying a weapons amnesty could be a good approach.

"The less guns on the street in this country, the better off it's going to be. So if that means giving a clear for the next six months that you can go and hand in your weapon at the police station to really clear them off the streets, I'm sure that would be helpful."

Regional property prices have soared to record highs.

Data from CoreLogic Australia shows that regional dwelling values and rent prices both hit record marks in the first quarter of 2024, rising at a faster rate than those in capital cities.

Just three of the 50 non-capital city areas studied by CoreLogic haven't posted a rent increase in the last three months.

New South Wales south coast town Batemans Bay had the biggest quarterly rent increase at six per cent, with WA's Bunbury and Queensland's Sunshine Coast also recording large increases.

The A-C-T has marked the start of National Reconciliation Week with a public holiday, the only jurisdiction in Australia to do so.

The week runs between two important dates in Australia - the anniversary of the 1967 referendum and Mabo decision - both key moments in recognising First Nations' people's rights and history.

ACT Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, Rachel Stephen-Smith, says it's an opportunity for reflection.

"This is an opportunity for Canberrans to come out, to celebrate the survival of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture after more than 200 years where there was a deliberate effort to stop people speaking their languages, and we know so many have been lost, and to assimilate, and effectively remove Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and histories from this nation."

Australian Oscar Piastri has claimed his first podium of the season, finishing second to Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in the Monaco Grand Prix.

The 23-year-old Australian outpaced Lerclerc's teammate Carlos Sainz by nine seconds to take second place.

The Melbourne-born Piastri is now sitting in sixth position in the overall standings.
