New US President Donald Trump will meet Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto on January 31, the White House says.

The leaders will discuss trade, security and immigration, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said.

In a phone call with Trump on Saturday, Pena Nieto offered to conduct an "open dialogue," the Mexican president's office said in a statement.

He also expressed interest in working on "an agenda that benefits both countries, with a focus on respect for the sovereignty of both nations and shared responsibility."

Mexico has been in Trump's sights since the first day of his presidential campaign.

Trump plans to build a wall on the border between the two countries, has said he will deport millions of illegal immigrants, renegotiate the North American Free Trade Ageement among the US, Mexico and Canada, and has threatened to impose high tariffs on automakers in Mexico.

Trump travelled to Mexico during his presidential campaign to meet with Pena Nieto.

The Mexican government announced last Thursday that Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray and Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo will travel to Washington on January 25 and 26 for their first meetings with the Trump administration.
