Suncorp chairman Ziggy Switkowski will retire from the board of financial services giant in September and be replaced in the role by Christine McLoughlin.

Dr Switkowski will end his seven-year stint at the company's annual general meeting, when Ms McLoughlin - a former Whitehaven Coal and Spark Infrastructure director - will take over.

Ms McLoughlin is currently the chairman of Suncorp's remuneration committee, and was the inaugural chairman of the Australian Payments Council, and is also a director of health insurer nib.

Dr Switkowski said he is delighted with the board's decision to appoint Ms McLoughlin as the next chairman.

"In her three years on the board, Christine has demonstrated a broad range of skills relevant to financial services," he said.

"I am confident that Christine will work well with the board, the CEO and managing director Michael Cameron, and senior management team to take this company to the next level of performance."

Ms McLoughlin said while it continues to be a time of great change, and some stress, for financial institutions, she is looking to embrace those opportunities and challenges.

"I look forward to working with my fellow directors and the Suncorp management team to continue to shape the Suncorp of tomorrow for our shareholders, customers and communities," she said.
