Brisbane residents led federal election discussion on Facebook over the past week, surpassing other major capital cities.

Facebook data for the third week of campaigning showed Brisbane, Adelaide, Newcastle, Hobart and Cairns as the top cities for election engagement in conversations.

Women continued to lead engagement around elections issues (54 per cent) while 40 per cent of people talking about the election on Facebook were between 25 and 45.

The week's most discussed politician on Facebook was Labor leader Bill Shorten, followed by Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

On Instagram, Mr Morrison continued his lead as the most-engaged politician account, also leading the week's top posts with a selfie.

Mr Shorten saw the second-highest engagement on Instagram of politician accounts.

Foreign policy remained the key topic of conversation on the social media site, including Indonesian relations and trade opportunities.
