'Recovery could take years'

The head of the flood recovery team in Queensland says the recovery effort is likely to take years, as Rockhampton flood levels dropped only slightly.

Major General Michael Slater says the rebuilding effort could see results within months, while there are forecasts that Rockhampton will stay flooded for a week and be cut off from the state's south for several more days, AAP reports.

SBS reporter Leroy Ah Ben says that although the flood peaked at 9.2m on Wednesday, it is still at 9.15m.

For long term residents, he says, there's no getting used to such conditions – even though floods have a habit of reappearing in the town.

Rockhampton's airport is expected to remain closed for three weeks.

It's a similar story for many Queensland towns with more 200,000 people in 40 communities flood-affected across an area the size of New South Wales.

Meanwhile , more storms are forecast to roll across central Queensland, Wide Bay and the southeast this weekend causing localised flash flooding in some areas and delaying vital repairs to roads and bridges.

Many Rockhampton residents thought the end was in sight when the Fitzroy River peaked on Wednesday, but up to 100 millimetres of rain on the weekend could frustrate the move towards the clean up.

Ten people have so far died as a direct result of Queensland's floods.
