Nintendo to launch mini version of SNES

Nintendo has announced it's launching a new version of its legendary console Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).

Japanese video game company Nintendo will launch a new version of its legendary console Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).

The new edition, Super NES Classic Edition, which fits in the palm of the hand, will be available in Europe and the United States on September 29.

However, the Japanese version of the gaming console, known as Super Famicom, will only be available from October 5.

The retro console, which will come with 21 classic games pre-installed, can be easily connected to a television set through HDMI cable and will be available for $US79.99, according to a statement by the Kyoto-based company.

Although the new console will be much smaller, its controls will be the same size and design as the original, allowing the user to relive the experience of the 1990s, Nintendo said.

"While many people from around the world consider the Super NES to be one of the greatest video game systems ever made, many of our younger fans never had a chance to play it," said Nintendo America's Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing Doug Bowser.

Fans can now once again play classics such as Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and try the sequel Star Fox 2.

The new version follows the launch of the Mini NES in November, which had sold some 2.3 million units as of March but stopped being manufactured by Nintendo in April.

In 1995, the company stopped making its American and European versions of the console, which sold more than 49 million units across the world.
