The biggest annual event in the video games calendar is expected to see Sony and Microsoft go head-to-head with new consoles.

Beginning next week in Los Angeles, the E3 convention brings together the major manufacturers and developers in gaming for a series of events to showcase upcoming titles and hardware, allowing visitors to see and play them for the first time.

Microsoft and Sony - the makers of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 respectively - are expected to unveil new versions of their flagship consoles at pre-show press conferences as well as discussing virtual reality.

Reports have suggested a new slim version of the Xbox One could be unveiled, as well as more information on Gears Of War 4, the latest sequel in the popular franchise announced at E3 last year.

There have also been suggestions that Microsoft could announce a closer partnership with the Oculus Rift virtual reality system. The headset is already sold with an Xbox controller for navigation, but full compatibility for some games could be announced.

Sony is expected to reveal a more powerful version of the PlayStation 4, called PlayStation Neo, which has been heavily rumoured in recent weeks alongside several claims of leaked specifications.

The technology giant is also expected to discuss its own virtual reality system, PlayStation VR, ahead of the headset's launch, scheduled for October.

Elsewhere at the show new instalments of Electronic Arts' Fifa franchise should be previewed for the first time, while publisher Activision should give more details on the next release in the Call Of Duty series, Infinite Warfare, which was confirmed last month.

New instalments in the popular Resident Evil and Mass Effect franchises are also rumoured to be part of the show, which attracts around 50,000 people from the games industry.
