Redheads, ginger mops and those with tangerine tresses have been issued a red alert to make a stand for their fiery strands this weekend.

The Red and Nearly Ginger Association (RANGA) along with Buderim Ginger is hosting its second annual Ginger Pride Rally in Melbourne.

The rally began on Saturday at 10am at Federation Square with a march to celebrate "uniqueness and diversity" in the community.

A festival is also being held at Federation Square following the rally with free ginger beer, games of "ginger beer pong", a photo booth and ginger speed dating.

The best-dressed ginger or redhead will win prizes including a year's supply of Buderim Ginger Beer.

Non-redheads are also invited, but must attend with a ginger friend and are asked to apply temporary hair colour available at the event or wear an orange wig.
