Bill Shorten will get a first-hand look at the flood devastation in northwest Queensland on Tuesday.

The federal opposition leader will visit Cloncurry to talk to local community leaders and graziers.

Disaster assistance has been extended to 35 shires in northern and western Queensland after more than two metres of rain fell in the Townsville region, triggering a one-in-100 year flood.

It's estimated 500,000 cattle died in the flooding with the recovery expected to take years.
