Kyle Anderson: The first Indigenous Australian to win a World Series of Darts title

Kyle Anderson wiped away tears after winning the 2017 Auckland Darts Masters early this month. It was the first time an Indigenous Australian had won a World Series of Darts title.

Winning the Auckland Darts Masters in August was a moment 29-year-old Kyle Anderson says he will never forget.

He tells SBS World News, "The amount of people that have come up to me when I've been walking around the shops and said congratulations, shook my hand, gave me a kiss and a cuddle, it's just astonishing how quickly things can turn."

The competition is part of the World Series of Darts tournaments organised by the Professional Darts Corporation.

Anderson, who says his nickname is the 'The Original' to pay homage to his Aboriginal heritage, says he designed his shirt with Aboriginal art for the competition and walked out to a remix of 'Solid Rock' by Goanna.

"I thought let's bring something back to where people know about Aboriginal people," Anderson said.

"We're not just footy players and basketball players."

"We're actually darts players as well."

This weekend, Anderson will play in front of his home crowd at the Perth Darts Masters.

"I want to play in front of my family, friends, school mates, teachers and everybody who doubted me as well," Anderson said.

"The ovation I got when I first played in Perth I didn't think I would get it, but I got it."

"I'm looking forward to everyone loving me again."
