Goodbye Clive Palmer! Goodbye Clive! Clive Palmer, goodbye!

The embattled businessman-MP has received a taste of his own medicine from voters in his Sunshine Coast electorate who have expressed their delight that he will no longer represent them.

The people of Fairfax are bidding Mr Palmer farewell in much the same manner he so gleefully celebrated the demise of Tony Abbott and former Queensland premier Campbell Newman.

The Palmer United Party founder confirmed on Wednesday he would not seek re-election in the seat he won by just 53 votes in 2013.

"It's fantastic, I'm delighted," Coolum Business and Tourism president Malcolm Chilman told AAP.

Mr Chilman said the vast majority of local voters had particularly been upset by Mr Palmer's behaviour and his decision to close his Coolum resort during his time as the member for Fairfax.

"I don't think it's surprising he's not running because frankly I don't think he'd have much of a chance," he said.

"He probably wants to save himself the humiliation by withdrawing."

Coolum resident Trish Bayne said Mr Palmer's decision not to run again was the "most sensible" one he ever made.

"I don't think he gives a rat's about anyone else but himself," she said.

Maroochydore Chamber of Commerce vice-president Kris McCue said the organisation would work with whoever was elected to further the interests of local businesses.

"We look forward to the election," he said.

Liberal National Party candidate Ted O'Brien, who lost to Mr Palmer in 2013, believes the only frustration stemming from his adversary's decision was that it prevented voters sending a frank message at the election.

"I suspect many people in Fairfax were hoping to cast their own judgment at the ballot box but an MP has a right to resign," he said.
