Anthrax found in dead Vic sheep

At least one sheep has died of anthrax on a farm in northern Victoria, authorities say.

Anthrax has been found in a dead sheep on a Victorian farm and authorities say the animal is among several that have died suddenly.

Agriculture Victoria says it has quarantined the Swan Hill property but has placed no restrictions on the movement of people or vehicles in the surrounding area.

It said infections were common among cattle and sheep in that part of the state and the public was not at risk.

"The risk is confined to people who handle dead livestock such as farmers, veterinarians and knackery workers," a joint statement from the Chief Veterinary Officer and Chief Health Officer said on Monday.

People from the affected farm have been offered testing and there is no impact on local produce or food safety, they said.

Animals which could have been exposed to risk of infection will be vaccinated and any that are infected will be destroyed.
