38th and last day of fed election campaign

What leaders Scott Morrison and Bill Shorten and their teams are up to on election day.

FEDERAL ELECTION CAMPAIGN: DAY 38, POLLING DAY

WHERE THE LEADERS ARE CAMPAIGNING

* Prime Minister Scott Morrison: Visiting polling booths in the Tasmanian seats of Braddon and Bass, before heading home to vote in his Sydney seat of Cook.

* Labor leader Bill Shorten: Expected to launch a blitz of seats in the key battleground of Victoria while voting in his own seat of Maribyrnong.

WHAT THE COALITION WANTS TO TALK ABOUT

Now is not the time for change.

WHAT LABOR WANTS TO TALK ABOUT:

The mood for change and stopping "the chaos of the last Liberal six years".

THE LATEST POLLS

* Final Newspoll shows Labor edging out further against the coalition to 51.5 to 48.5 on a two-party basis, compared to 51-49 previously.

WHAT IS MAKING NEWS:

* Polling booths opened across the eastern states at 8.00 am AEST.

* About 4.76 million votes had already been cast at pre-polling centres across the nation, with 700,000 votes cast on Friday.

* A nasty election campaign took a turn for the worse after a Liberal volunteer in Tony Abbott's Sydney seat was assaulted with a corkscrew.

THEY SAID WHAT?

"Morrison's playing a game of football with one player. I'm playing a game of football with a whole team."

Bill Shorten on his campaign strategy compared to Scott Morrison's.

TWEETED: Our hard working staff are making the final preparations, the ballot papers are being taken out of secure storage and local community groups are priming their BBQs...it must be election day! Polling places open across the nation at 8am local time. Come and have you say. #ausvotes
