Vencendo em quatro dos cinco eleitorados, Bill Shorten garante que deverá ser o candidato a primeiro-ministro pelos trabalhistas nas próximas eleições federais.
A sua posição estava sendo questionada e Anthony Albanese estava aparecendo como uma possível alternativa a Bill Shorten, mas parece que Shorten agora sai bem fortalecido destas eleições suplementares, após o seu Partido Trabalhista vencer nos eleitorados de Braddon, Longman, Perth e Fremantle.
Falando para os membros do partido após a vitória em Longman, em Queensland, Bill Shorten disse que este resultado era um chamado, um alerta, ao governo da coalisão Liberal/Nacional de Malcolm Turnbull.
"You know, one thing about the Labor Party, which our critics and our enemies have underestimated all the time - that when our critics write us off in the media, when our opponents write us down and write the vision for Australia small, you can always count upon the rank and file of the Labor movement, trade unionists and ALP members."
Com este resultado ontem, a coalisão governamental não conseguiu aumentar a sua maioria de apenas uma cadeira na Câmara Baixa do parlamento, a House of Representatives.
Mas o ministro federal do Setor da Defesa, Christopher Pyne, disse que o governo não está preocupado, ao comentar a derrota da candidata liberal Georgina Downer - filha do ex-ministro federal Alexander Downer, na cadeira de Mayo, no estado da Austrália do Sul.
"The result in Mayo is exactly what you’d expect. The Liberals didn’t contest in Western Australia, we did very well in Braddon. I know that the Labor party's spin is that this is an amazing result. But effectively, very little has changed. Labor's won seats it already had back, which if the government had one any of them, would have been the first time in 100 years that a government had beaten the opposition."
Enquanto isso, o ex-líder da oposição trabalhista, Wayne Swan, disse que os resultados mostravam claramente o que, para ele, vai acontecer nas próximas eleições: a vitórioa dos trabalhistas.
"This is a complete rejection and utter humiliation for the Prime Minister. The Labor vote has got a four in front of it and the Liberal vote has got a two in front of it. So, quite an emphatic rejection of the Prime Minister. Given that he was the one that said this was all about leadership. Well I'll tell you what has shone through here, Bill Shorten's tenacity and Bill Shorten's policy program."
No eleitorado de Mayo, a vitória ficou com a candidata Rebekha Sharkie, do partido Aliança de Centro - o Centre Alliance - sobre a candidata liberal Georgina Downer, que foi criticada por não morar no eleitorado mas sim em Melbourne, apesar de ter crescido lá.
O ministro federal dos Assuntos Sociais, Dan Tehan, disse que o governo não se arrepende de ter apoiado Georgina Downer para a cadeira de Mayo, que foi do seu pai por muito tempo.
TEHAN: "I wouldn't call her an interstate candidate."
REPORTER: "She's from Melbourne?"
TEHAN: "She grew up there (Adelaide Hills in Mayo), she spent a large part of her life there and I think she is an outstanding candidate. And I'm so pleased that she's announced that her campaign for the next general election starts today and you know, full support for her."
