Have you ever been inspired to write a song by watching a press conference?

Love for nature, life experiences and other factors are usually the inspiration for songwriters and poets to pen songs and poems.

However, it was a very different thought that inspired Devanjana Iyer to write a song during the coronavirus crisis which Australia is presently facing.

“It was Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s live press conference on coronavirus crisis that inspired me to write this song,” says the nine-year-old songwriter and singer.

Melbourne based Devanjana also known as Devy is a passionate musician. It was during the Easter school break that she happened to watch Mr Morrison going live on various social media platforms with his press conferences on updates to the virus.

Even though Scott Morrison continuously insisted on the importance of the public staying home, Devy who keenly watches the news every day, noticed that people are not abiding by the PM’s advice.

This prompted the little musician to pen down a song correlating it to coronavirus pandemic.

The song that describes the consequences of coronavirus and the importance of following imposed restrictions often stressed by the PM was posted on her Facebook page capturing the attention of hundreds.
“I have been taking the challenge called these 21 original songs writing challenge and on one of the days, I decided to write one on coronavirus'" she said.

"I got inspired to do it when I saw our Prime Minister Scott Morrison doing live on Instagram and Facebook to tell us that we need to stay home. Some people were not listening. So, I thought, Ohh, I need to write a song about that," said Devy.

“When I saw the Prime Minister going live, I wanted to spread the message because some people weren’t listening to what he is saying. So, I wanted to spread the message in a way that people could remember …like a tune…a tune…a song that could be in their head on what they need to do and what’s happening.

"So, I wrote this coronavirus song.”

According to the nine-year-old, a tune just appears in her head and she compiles it with the help of her piano.

“It was actually not that hard because I want to write that song and I had that motivation. It took only 15 minutes for me to write the song,” adds Devy.

'Eurovision Australia 2020 opener'

Devanjana who loves to write and sing songs rose to national fame this year when she performed in the opener of the prestigious Eurovision Australia 2020 song contest held in Gold Coast this year.

She sang alongside Australian singer-songwriter and actress Kate Miller-Heidke in front of a packed crowd.

“When Kate Miller-Heidke performed in Melbourne in September 2019, Devy who was seated among the crowd sang the song aloud which gained the attention of the star singer," says Devy’s mum Deepthi Padmaja Sudhakaran.

"The little singer then got the opportunity to perform a song sharing the stage with the popular singer and received a standing ovation from over 2,500 people.

“Kate Miller-Heidke posted the video of Devy's song on her Facebook the very next day. It was widely received by thousands demanding her to contest in Eurovision. Many tagged the song to Paul Clarke, the Director of Eurovision Australia."

"In 2019 Devy won Fast Track, one of Australia's biggest singing showcases performing Kate Miller-Heidke's Zero Gravity. "

"This enabled Devy to get the opportunity to perform an opening act at Eurovision, a prestigious song contest," added Deepthi

Having composed numerous songs and gaining the attention of many, Devy and her parents are now of the belief that her coronavirus song will help others to follow the restrictions emphasized by Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
