Parrots

There are over fifty types of parrots in Australia.

Cockatoos are the largest of the parrot family.

Black cockatoos are the largest of all.

The sulphur-crested cockatoo is the most common cockatoo.

It is named that because of the yellow crest on its head.

It is found on the east coast and in the north of Australia.

Cockatoos live in the suburbs and will stay in the same area most of the year.

Cockatoos have very strong beaks and use them to crack open native nuts and seeds.

They lay their eggs in tree hollows. Do not feed cockatoos.

They use wood to sharpen their beaks and may damage your home if they are waiting to be fed.

The galah is a medium sized parrot. Galahs have dark pink faces and grey feathers.

Galahs mostly eat seeds from the ground and live in large flocks.

The rainbow lorikeet is a small Australian parrot.

It is the most common parrot in Australia.

Lorikeets are colourful and love to chat with their family.

Rainbow lorikeets eat nectar from flowers and eat native fruits and seeds.

You should not feed any type of Australian bird.

Do not give them bread or honey.

Feeding these birds will shorten their lives.
