Melanie:Hi there. Melanie from the Department of Oz-Speak.

Driving in Australia.

LILY sits in the driver's seat. Mariam is right next to her.

Lily:
So sorry. Always troubling you to teach me.

Mariam:
Always happy to help.

Lily:
It's so stupid. I already have Chinese license!

Mariam:
We have to follow the rules.

Lily:
So many rules...

Mariam:
We can't live without rules.
You’ll feel better once you pass the test.

Lily:
You should be a teacher.

Mariam:
I’m already yours. Should we do final checks?

Lily:
OK.

Mariam:
License?

Lily:
Check.

Mariam:
Log book?

Lily:
Check. I have the app.

Mariam:
Show me the records.

Melanie:
Dammit! I really need to stop using smoke as my entrance!

To get your driver's licence in Australia, you must first get your Learner's licence. Or as we say: L's.

L's drivers must practise their driving with a supervisor.

Lily is on her L's and is hoping to get on her P's. Her Provisional licence.

She must record her driving hours in a log book before taking her P's exam.

She looks ready, doesn't she? She totally understands all the basic road signs and rules, I hope.

Mariam:
Ready? Are you comfortable?

Lily:
Yeah, good.

Mariam:
Seat belt, Lily.

Lily:
Oh... seatbelt!

Mariam:
Remember to indicate. Turn on your blinker.
And go.
Slow down!

Lily:
What?

Mariam:
Road rules! No speeding. OK?! This is a 25 zone!

Lily:
OK! Not much fun.

Mariam:
OK. Turn left.
Have a look left and right. You can go it’s your right of way. Go!

Good.
Nice.
Speed hump.
Woah!

Lily:
See… easy!

Mariam:
Don’t smile and drive.

Two minutes. Log your kilometres in the app.

Lily:
On it!

That was twenty minutes.

Mariam:
Sorry. Long line! Next stop?

OK. Confidence OK?
Don’t run this lady over.

Fifteen minutes. I promise!

Lily:
Yeah, yeah, yeah!

Mariam:
OK. That was my fault.
But isn't this fun?!

Lily:
Complete! I’m ready to take the driving test.

Mariam:
Ah yes! But you cannot drive like a speed freak in the test.
Oh… Is that really the time? I have to pick up my dry cleaning.

Lily:
Does that mean I get to drive fast?

Lily proudly puts P plates on the car.

Melanie:
Well done, Lily! She might be a bit of a speed freak but hey, she still got her P's. Look out for road signs, there's a time to go fast and time to take it slow.

Looks like she better act fast to get the shop of her dreams!
