'You inspire me': Multicultural Australia salutes Lee Lin Chin

Australians across the country have declared their gratitude to newsreader Lee Lin Chin after she announced her departure from the Special Broadcasting Service on Thursday.

Many applauded Chin - who was born in Indonesia's capital Jakarta and raised in Singapore - for being a pillar of diversity on national television. 

"[You] give Asians hope that, yes, we can be in an industry where not many Asians are present. Farewell Queen!" one social media user said. 

"Lee, for women, for diversity ...Thankful for your example," said another.

As well as her authoritative presenting style, Chin, a Golden Logie nominee, is also known for her sartorial choices. Many said they would miss her "colourful personality" and unique fashion sense.

Chin said on Thursday: “Having spent the bulk of my professional life at SBS, this isn't by any means an easy decision." 

"I shall be leaving a happy and satisfying role as a newsreader. My friends and colleagues for whom I have fervent respect will be deeply missed."

She also left fans with a cheeky tweet on Thursday, hinting it wasn't the last they'd be seeing of her.
