Argentina's main rival in Group D will be a familiar one, Nigeria.
Nigeria – which has been grouped with Argentina in five of its six World Cup appearances – is the only African team that’s managed to re-qualify after playing in Brazil four years ago.
But getting past the group stage won’t be easy for any team.
Iceland and Croatia are also in Group D.
Led by key playmaker Luka Modric, Croatia carries high hopes into the tournament with the country’s pundits billing this squad as the most potent since 1998 when the Blazers stunned many by making the semi-finals.
But the smallest country ever to make an appearance at the World Cup is also hoping to be the biggest giant-killer.
With a population of just over 300,000, Iceland showed it has a disproportionate amount of football ability by knocking England out of Euro 2016 on its way to the quarter-finals.
All this makes for an intriguing Group D with Argentina and Nigeria the slightest of favourites to progress through to the round of 16.
