This significant gathering will showcase the rich, lived experiences of migrants through a creative blend of original music and short films.

Scheduled to commence at 5:00 p.m. at The Rock, 26 Cecil Avenue, Cannington, the event promises to bring these stories to life and offer profound insight into the journey of migrants as they transition from their homelands to new lives in Australia.

The project, led by WOWS’s founder and president, Filiz Shah, aims to convert these powerful narratives into original songs and films that capture the essence of each storyteller’s journey.

These artistic creations not only preserve these crucial stories but also serve to inspire and empower future generations.

Reflecting on the project, Shah notes, “Our Stories, Our Song is a transformative endeavour that honours migrant experience through art and music, turning personal tales of struggle and triumph into lasting cultural artifacts.”

“Our Stories, Our Songs” also marks a pivotal moment for WOWS, a nonprofit organisation with a diverse membership base spanning 82 distinct cultural, linguistic, and ethnic (CALD) backgrounds.

The organisation is deeply committed to empowering women and their families, fostering unity, and bridging cultural divides within the community.

This event epitomises WOWS’s mission by using the universal languages of music and art to connect individuals, celebrate diversity, and strengthen communal bonds.

The narratives and songs from the event will be performed live, immortalised in a book, and recorded as a music album.

This ensures that stories and their associated emotions and lessons are accessible to a broader audience, extending the reach of these powerful voices far beyond the initial performance.

Filiz Shah, who migrated and faced the challenges of supporting her siblings at a young age after losing her parents, founded WOWS, driven by a blend of personal experiences.

A particularly poignant moment involved her daughter, Diya, highlighting the need for a platform that promotes understanding and solidarity among diverse communities.

This personal backstory adds depth to Shah’s leadership and commitment to migrant empowerment.

In addition to showcasing migrant stories, the event serves as a rallying call for young women from CALD communities.

Shah’s message is clear and inspiring:
Embrace your heritage, use your voice to advocate for change, and actively participate in your communities. Your unique experiences and perspectives are invaluable in helping to create a more inclusive and equitable society.

By transforming personal migration stories into songs and films, “Our Stories, Our Songs” highlights individual experiences and underscores the collective journey of migrants.
